Kaitlyn & Philip
Kaitlin & Philip's love story
"Philip owned two stores at Mockingbird station that I used to shop at. I noticed him while roaming Centre and thought he was a MEGA hunk (like a young JFK, but with better teeth, and without the “womanizer vibe"!) I was thrilled when later on in life we ended up having some mutual friends, and we became digital friends. Once we started talking, it wasn’t too long before we decided to go on a date. After about 8 months of pretending we were just going to be friends, we decided that we had too much of a good thing going. I stopped playing hard to get, and he asked me to be his girlfriend!
Two years later, we jumped in the deep end and bought a 1958 motel in Colorado, which we've lovingly renovated and reopened as the Amigo Motor Lodge.
In June 2016, Philip surprised me with a romantic birthday trip to Santa Fe. Over dinner, he gave me a birthday card and when I looked up from reading it — there he was! Ring and all. I was obviously shocked, but it was such a happy and special moment :D I’ll never forget the look on his face.
Philip attended University of Richmond and London School of Economics, and I studied advertising at SMU.
We currently live and work together in Salida, Colorado, where we’re renovating and running a boutique motel called The Amigo Motor Lodge (shameless plug: www.stayamigo.com). I also work remotely as a copywriter for Caliber Creative in Dallas, TX.
Favorite thing about the day: It’s impossible to pick just one thing. The whole day was a dream! I do think our ceremony was pretty special though. A lot of people write their own vows — but we took it a step further and wrote the entire ceremony. It was officiated by my former boss and mentor, so it was amazing to share that moment with someone who really knew us.
The first dances were all pretty great, too. My dad and I went full-on "Dancing with the Stars” with a goofy choreographed routine (complete with Jazz hands!) Philip and his mom crushed the Fox Trot, and Philip and I were in dance lessons the ENTIRE week before the wedding learning the art of the swing dance. It was a lot.
Her dress: From the first time I saw images of Kate Moss’s 2011 wedding in Vogue, I knew that I wanted an lots of soft white and lush green florals as the base for everything. It’s such a dreamy look. I described the vision to our florist as a “Super Romantic Garden Wedding” — but then we added a bit of flair with antlers, rustic wooden tables, velvety textures and succulents. I was generally pretty carefree in the decision-making. We had great vendors who we trusted, and Philip’s mom is a party-planning GODDESS sent down from the heavens! She and Melanie really took the reigns while I was back in Colorado. The one thing I was very particular about was the lighting. Nothing could feel too artificial, so we had a ton of candlelight, lanterns and pretty string lights. Okay, I lied. I was also very particular about the invitations, so I designed them myself :D
TIPS FROM THE BRIDE: Just know that you aren’t going to be able to control everything. Try to breathe, enjoy the process and TRUST YOUR VENDORS! They know what they’re doing :) Make sure your wedding planner knows to bring you food and your drink of choice during the reception. (Thank you, Melanie! You rock.) You may THINK you’re going to casually walk over to the bar and fetch a gin and soda, but there are actually about 7,000 people who want to talk to you and get a better look at the dress! You will never make it to the bar. Trust me on this."-Kait (Bride)
